Responsive web design – what is it?

Responsive artists website design on tablet

Responsive web design (mobile-friendly web design) is the practice of designing a single website that provides an optimal viewing experience across a range of devices from a SmartPhone or tablet to laptop and full-screen computers, a website that responds to the size of the screen it is shown on.

By using responsive web design you don’t have to build & maintain multiple sites for different devices – a one (responsive) size fit’s all.

Not only does this save you time & money with the initial web development, but also with ongoing web maintenance & updates,  but is also the recommended method of building websites by Google.

Overview of Google’s recommendations

Google recommends webmasters follow the industry best practice of using responsive web design, namely serving the same HTML for all devices and using only CSS media queries to decide the rendering on each device.
